Four Winds of the Tasman

Elena Kats-Chernin - by Bridget Elliot

Set in a coastal valley nine kilometres south of the township of Bermagui, the Four Winds Festival will host world premieres by Terry Riley, Peter Sculthorpe, Ross Edwards and Elena Kats-Chernin.

From the grassy incline of the ampitheatre, the audience can sit back with the sun on their skin and a glass of wine in their hands. Festival director Christopher Latham intends that listeners "leave feeling refreshed and rejuvenated - with their sense of the power of art renewed".

The bi-annual event explores a tapestry of music and colour, with performances organised according to the energy and atmosphere created by each composition. The first day of concerts will portray Red and Orange, colours of earth and fire, featuring William Barton, didjeridu, and Synergy Percussion. The festival will also feature the Australian premiere of both Arvo Part's Arbos and Ross Edwards' Dance Mantras. Riley will perform Gershwin and his iconic work In C.

In this esoteric program, Latham's depiction of the spectrum is reflected in the surrounds, sound and words. Poetry and spoken word are also interwoven into this buzzing chapter of the festival's history.

The Four Winds Festival runs from the 14th - 16th April 2006.
