Labyrinthmaker: the Travelling Platform

Elena Kats-Chernin - by Bridget Elliot

The Pierrot Lunaire Ensemble Wien have created a maze of connections around the world, criss-crossing the globe from their home in Vienna to various far-reaching destinations with a unique project.

With a commitment to the promotion of young composers and the expansion of contemporary repertoire for chamber music, the ensemble provide a travelling platform, performing chosen compositions in Vienna and following on to give a concert of the same work in the composer's home country.

Culture and history play a large part in the manifestation of a piece of music, and the performance schedule of the ensemble provides an opportunity to assess the resonance of a work, both as reference-free composition, and as a piece situated within the cultural atmosphere in which it was created. The importance of collaboration between composers and musicians is strongly upheld by the ensemble, which work intensively with composers to achieve the most fluid expression of their intent for the four performances of each premiere.

Founders of the Pierrot Lunaire Ensemble Wien, Gustavo Balanesco and Silvia Gelos, have been working together for 18 years. Originally performing repertoire for flute and piano, their search for new and challenging repertoire led them to investigate other avenues for performance. In 2004, their initial call for works resulted in so many applications from all over the world, that the concept for the Labyrinthmaker took form. "At that time we received over 250 works. With so much creative potential, one cannot remain indifferent", Gelos says.

The most fundamental aspect to the work of the Pierrot Lunaire Ensemble Wien is the "exchange and cooperation to create the same opportunities for all participants", whilst representing new composition "independent of styles and schools, of the highest artistic quality", says Gelos.
